Family-Friendly and Pet-Friendly Hotel Vintage Plaza

I’m not sure if it was the complimentary glass of wine that was offered upon arrival (they host a daily wine reception from 5 to 6pm in their stylish and welcoming lobby) or the friendly valet who volunteered an easy, affordable parking option rather than selling us on the Hotel’s valet service but Hotel Vintage Plaza in Portland had me at “Hello.” More affordable than the Hotel Monaco, its sister Kimpton property a couple blocks away, the Hotel Vintage Plaza is centrally located within walking distance to great restaurants and shopping (some visitors will be thrilled that Pioneer Place, Nordstrom and Macy’s are nearby but we were more excited about the famous Powell’s Books about 5 short blocks away).

A standard room was fairly small for our family of four plus one dog (we kept tripping over the wheels on the base of a rolling chair beside the desk) but we all enjoyed the inviting décor with warm colors and crisp white linens on the beds. Amenities included fun terrycloth animal-print robes…

…and everyone’s favorite for the novelty of making drinks and pleasure consuming them, a Keurig coffee maker. Hot cocoa “K-Cups” are available for the kids if you ask at the front desk.

The generous amenities even applied to dear little Happy Dog who was greeted with a charming place setting with whimsically painted dog bowls, a stuffed toy and doggie treats in the room.

He showed his appreciation by behaving like a true gentleman the whole trip, he didn’t bark even once! Now if we could just get the kids to behave so nicely… Feeding them at the adjoining Pazzo Ristorante helped. The menu is Italian, the food is wonderful, and the ambiance is grown-up without being too stuffy for kids to feel comfortable. Watching the activity of the open kitchen is always entertaining and the kids enjoyed seeing the big wood-burning oven where their cheese pizza with fresh mozzarella was made. (And I appreciated that it was only $5 for this tasty pizza large enough to share between two children—nice bambino’s menu, Pazzo and even nicer wait-staff for suggesting we share!) My dinner was house-made pumpkin filled ravioli and a yummy variation of a Caesar salad… enough for all of us to share.
